Sapling Learning, established in 2005, is our online homework system, which currently serves over 1,200 universities and colleges, helping over 500,000 students a year. We're looking for a passionate biochemistry educator with excellent writing skills and natural leadership skills to take charge in the development and maintenance of our higher education biochemistry content across the various systems.

This position works with a small team to oversee the creation and maintenance of all higher education digital content for biochemistry. Your primary role is to ensure that the content is pedagogically sound.

  • Work with the program manager and content director on digital content strategy; create prototypes and design content to fit the needs of the market
  • Work with project manager, content director, and media editor to ensure projects are progressing as expected and to make adjustments as necessary
  • Work with engineering to design biochemistry-specific features for our digital products
    Participate in market research (surveys, student and instructor focus groups, student and instructor interviews, visit campuses) and attend relevant conferences to represent Macmillan
  • Learning and help conduct market research

    Content Development

  • Hire and manage a team of contract authors to create and review biochemistry homework questions and other media, adhering to project plans
  • Directly author new content as needed
  • Review and revise work written by content authors and provide constructive criticism and guidance to those authors
  • Ensure clear questions and solutions of varying difficulties and type (e.g. numeric entry, multiple choice, sorting), which test students' understanding and application of biochemistry concepts
  • Ensure hints, solutions, and feedback provide clarification of student mistakes and misconceptions and coach students toward mastery within each question
  • Create mockups and storyboards for our art and interactives teams and sign off on final art and media
  • Manage the biochemistry question content banks by identifying holes and specifying new questions to be authored; regularly review existing content


  • Masters or Doctorate in Biochemistry
  • At least 2 years experience teaching higher education biochemistry courses
  • Experience using digital instruction tools, such as online homework systems
  • Strong technical computer skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong project management skills, with a track record of completing projects on time


  • Familiarity with a "flipped" or studio classroom setting
  • Experience with learning objectives, Bloom's, and/or Depth of Knowledge
  • Working knowledge of HTML
  • Experience managing a team
  • Experience using or creating storyboards for animations
  • Experience creating curriculum for online instruction
  • Experience working within budgets over $100,000/year
