The program manager for Communication and College Success is responsible for the overall health and performance of our products for introduction to human communication and college success courses including strategic, long-term planning; list management; market analysis; budgeting; profitability; publication goals; digital road map; acquisitions and partnerships; relationship building and a focus on addressing customer needs through oversight of course product development. The successful candidate will be skilled at cultivating relationships, will have a strong understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with publishing new and first editions, print and digital products, and will be able work effectively with others to implement strategies to transition the list from print to digital with an emphasis on enhancing learning.

The Program Manager will report to the Publisher for Communication and College Success and will work closely with developmental editors, media editorial teams, sales and marketing.

Major Responsibilities:

Management of handbook team and direct reports

  • Oversee one development editor. Supervisory duties include overseeing project management, budgeting and approving T & E, managing resource allocation, and advising on author relations.
  • Build a sense of team and camaraderie with direct group and team.
  • Oversee hiring and management of freelance resources, as needed.

    List Management

  • Ensure that publication of all products are timely to market, competitive, and meet their financial and sales goals.
  • Serve as the primary contact for our authors and internal team members. Develop relationships with potential authors, reviewers, and members of the communication and college success communities.
  • Recruit authors, advisers, and partners and plan the development of new programs and prune existing products, as necessary.
  • Plan revisions in a timely manner. Develop and drive creative and competitive publication strategies for revisions.
  • Collaborate with other editors and members of the digital product group to identify and articulate digital functionality requirements that execute on a market-informed digital strategy. Develop plans for a competitive digital portfolio that allows for future innovation.
  • Develop a keen sense of the communication and college success marketplaces, and use that market knowledge to inform plans for the growth of the program.

    Program Management

  • Manage and oversee development of key programs to ensure timely delivery of content including determining schedules with editorial development, authors and production while communicating progress to other team members
  • Through collaboration with authors and development, determine the plan and implement the creation of market leading products and resources to support instrutors and help students to ensure that we publish market leading programs.
  • Research, plan, and execute the development and integration of multimedia-based teaching and learning resources to provide for a robust program
    Overall Sales and List Performance
  • Travel to conferences and collaborate with marketing, sales, learning solutions specialists, as appropriate, to ensure successful sales of all programs.
  • Through attendance at national conferences, interaction with the communication and college success communities, interaction with sales and marketing, and monitoring industry trends, identify and understand customer challenges to inform product development.
  • Seed new adoptions through market development events and outreach, work with sales reps and marketing managers to sell products and refine marketing messages. Travel to support sales efforts, as needed.

    Budgets and Profitability

  • Ensure timely, accurate evaluation and maintenance of budgetary information.
  • Manage and serve as the key decision-maker for the P&Ls for franchises and titles and new product models.
  • Work with marketing to determine appropriate sales forecasts and pricing strategies

    Required Skills / Knowledge:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent editorial judgment and skill
  • Outstanding project management skills, with ability to juggle multiple ongoing projects, to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, and the ability to delegate and benchmark effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with ability to form productive, collaborative working relationships with authors, author teams, and in house teams including marketing, content and assessment development, media editorial and production
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Apps

    Experience Needed:
    -A minimum of five (5) years of experience in higher educational publishing/learning company including experience in higher education sales.
    -Experience with educational technology and ability to work cross functionally with media and product teams a must

    Educational Background Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • English or Communication degree and/or teaching experience a benefit, but not required
