The Graphics Design Specialist is responsible for the creation, design and development of desktop publications, forms and brochures for printing. The The Graphics Design Specialist Creates forms and documents using various graphic arts, desktop publishing, Adobe Acrobat and other web-based software. Serves as liaison with department content managers and Information Services personnel to fulfill corporate web site needs. Utilizes desktop software and other digital equipment to create various correspondence, reports, insurance policies and other miscellaneous documents. Prepares digital direct-to-plate color separations and direct-to-press digital files for 4-color printing process. Required ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Essential Duties

  • Maintains expertise in desktop publishing software systems as necessary to design and produce direct-to-plate images for printing. Sets up weekly and monthly Company publications and forms, to be printed, including policies, endorsements, reports, brochures, flyers, promotional materials, and special projects.
  • Designs and tests documents using expertise in various software and web-based applications to ensure proper functionality and appearance of published documents to Shelter web sites. Maintains electronic filing system on restricted web site drive.
  • Creates digital 4-color separations for printed documents, adjusting settings, color calibration and imposition for printing of graphic designs for direct-to-plate system. Creates digital files for direct-to-press printing.
  • Utilizes desktop publishing equipment to perform advanced typesetting and graphic designs, including scanning capabilities with picture publisher and text scanning equipment.
  • Performs other graphic design duties using the desktop software to create special projects and assists other Document Services personnel when time permits.
  • Communicates orally with other department personnel each week in organizing and directing workflow.
  • Communicates in person and in writing with Web Administrator and content managers to focus on design of web sites to meet corporate needs and maintain user-friendly functionality of sites.
  • Must be able to operate calculator, PC, and various graphic design software.
  • Must be able to operate complex desktop publishing system, direct-to-plate processor, and document scanner for developing direct-to-press images for printing.
  • Must be able to adjust settings, color calibration, and imposition to produce 4-color digital separations for printing.
  • Must be able to change toner in printers, perform routine daily maintenance and periodic thorough cleaning of equipment to keep in top working order.
  • Performs other related duties and special projects as requested by the Supervisor of Document Services.


  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for interaction with others.
  • Ability to type 70 WPM minimum with accuracy.
  • Ability to develop high level of proficiency with current internet tools and techniques.
  • Ability to learn and develop proficiency in graphic arts software applications and graphic arts design.
  • Creativity and initiative are required.
  • Excellent reading skills and knowledge of syntax, grammar, punctuation and spelling required.
  • Good math skills for calculations on typesetting equipment.
  • Ability to manage time effectively.


  • General education at high school or business college level or equivalent job related experience.
  • One year on-the-job training to become fully competent in performing typesetting and web site operations.


  • Knowledge of the insurance business and specifically a thorough knowledge of Shelter's operations and procedures as they apply to Document Services functions, demonstrating superior performance and a thorough knowledge of all graphics design and Document Services procedures and equipment.

  • Works under moderate supervision, and is responsible for meeting strict production schedules in fast-paced working environment.

  • Maintains security of documents through protection controls to prevent unapproved alteration of company forms.
  • Prepares test documents and analyzes the results before publishing to web sites.
  • Accountable for daily production and error records for preparation of monthly report.
