Requirements
Macmillan Learning is seeking a Program Manager for our market-leading Psychology list. The Program Manager is responsible for the overall health and performance of the list including strategic, long-term planning; development and refinement of a customer-driven digital strategy; author and list management; market analysis; budgeting; profitability; publication goals; and a focus on solving customer pain points. The successful candidate will implement strategies to further the transition of the list from print to digital with an emphasis on providing learning insights that lead to success for students, instructors and curriculum programs. This opportunity puts you at the forefront of working with a prestigious group of Psychology authors including award winning psychologists in research and teaching. The Program Manager will report to the Social Sciences Program Director and work closely with the content, assessment, and media editorial teams within the psychology team and closely collaborate with learning science, digital product, and technology teams as we develop and validate a portfolio of digital solutions for psychology.

Major Responsibilities:

List Management

  • Develop and refine, in concert with colleagues in Digital Product, Technology, and Learning Science, a digital strategy that articulates and supports pedagogical models employed by psychologists inside and outside the classroom.
  • Collaborate with psychology editors (development, assessment and media editorial) and members of the digital product group to identify and articulate digital functionality requirements that execute on a market-informed digital strategy. Develop plans for a competitive digital portfolio that allows for future innovation.
  • Ensure that publication of all Psychology products are timely to market, competitive, and meet their financial and sales goals.
  • Serve as the primary contact for our authors.
  • Plan revisions in a timely manner. Develop and drive creative and competitive publication strategies for revisions.
  • Acquire new products and prune existing products when necessary. Develop business plans around titles to ultimately determine what programs are published.
  • Develop a keen sense of the Psychology marketplace, and use that market knowledge to inform plans for the list.
  • Develop relationships with potential authors, reviewers and members of the teaching and research community to help sign and generate new projects or partnerships that meet list and market needs.
    Overall Sales and List Performance
  • Travel and collaborate with marketing, sales, learning solutions specialists, and market development, as appropriate, to ensure successful sales of all Psychology products and titles.
  • Through campus work, attendance at national conferences, and monitoring industry trends, identify and understand customer challenges to inform product development.
  • Seed new adoptions through events and outreach, work with reps and marketing managers to sell products and refine marketing messages. Travel to support sales efforts, as needed.
    Budgets and Profitability
  • Ensure timely, accurate evaluation and maintenance of budgetary information.
  • Manage and serve as the key decision-maker for the P&Ls for franchises and titles and new product models.

    Required Skills / Knowledge:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent editorial judgment and skill
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with ability to form productive working relationships with authors, author teams, and in house teams including marketing, content and assessment development, media editorial and production
  • Strong project management skills, with ability to juggle multiple ongoing projects and work effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Apps

    Experience Needed:

  • Minimum: four (4) years of experience in sales, marketing, or editorial with a higher education learning company or related industry
  • Desired: four (4) years of experience as a program manager / acquisitions editor for consideration for Senior or Executive level position.

    Educational Background Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Psychology degree is a plus
