Additional Information Purpose

To coordinate all aspects of the print production process for a book publisher specializing in art and photography books and scholarly monographs. We publish approximately 100 books annually.

Essential Functions

Prepare cost estimates for printing and binding of new books and reprints based on printer quotes. Prepare cast-offs for the majority of the academic books we publish to estimate the final length of books when printed. Process vendor invoices, create purchase orders, perform statistical analyses, and final production plans. Collaborate with the Design and Production manager to oversee the scholarly template design program. Create full book production schedules. Analyze manuscripts to choose a template design.Fill in templates for typesetting specifications.Send out edited manuscripts and art for typesetting. Collaborate with designers to create type specs for new elements and prepare layouts for image galleries or complex arrangements.Answer and relay questions from printers, typesetters, designers and copyeditors. Oversee the majority of the reprint process for 50 or more reprints per year including preparing estimates, seeing that corrections are made, completing spec sheets and purchase orders, checking and approving all printed proofs, and supervising vendor schedules. Evaluate and develop short run digital printing and print on demand options for reprints. Coordinate full color non-format art and photography books. Collaborate with printers, designers, and editors to obtain cost estimates for books. Create and maintain full book production schedules. Traffic and check all stages of proof, printing and binding, shipping, and other required services. Collaborate with designers to convey corrections to printers of multiple rounds of color proofs from pre-press vendors and printers. Participate in strategic planning and other special projects. Collaborate with the Design and Production manager to strategize new workflows and source new vendors to cut costs and maximize quality.

Marginal/Incidental functions

Pack and ship. Train and supervise student workers as needed. General office tasks as they arise. Other related functions as assigned.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree. Proficient in Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat. An excellent eye for detail and commitment to producing the highest quality books. Highly organized with the ability to work on multiple on-going projects. Self-motivated and proactive with excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and within a group. Two to Three years of publishing or related print industry experience. Ability to lift a heavy carton of books.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with FileMaker Pro and database management, Adobe InDesign, and Photoshop. Experience with offset, POD, and SRDP printing preferred. An interest in exploring, developing, and optimizing work-flows, as well as adapting to new technologies and workflows as necessary. More than three years of experience.
